Cumberland is home to some of the world’s most stunning rural landscapes, boasting two world heritage sites and our world class attractions draw in millions of visitors a year. As a newly-formed unitary authority we are excited by the opportunity we have before us. We are able to join up services and deliver at a scale that has not been available to us previously. We are using these opportunities to create a council that engages with, and empowers residents, whilst using our strengths, influence and willingness to do things differently to improve the lives of everyone in Cumberland.

Following the promotion of the previous postholder, into a role within our partner unitary authority - Westmorland & Furness, we are now seeking our next Head of Waste Services. Managing a core project team across a varied portfolio, this is a critical role involving the delivery of our waste disposal aims for both Cumberland (as host of our inter-authority agreement (IAA)), and Westmorland & Furness, ensuring the development of our future ambitions. You will be financially and politically astute, with a strong contractual management ability, and a sharp focus on service improvement and commercial opportunities for the council.

We are therefore excited to talk to waste professionals across both the public and private sector, who understand the statutory nature of waste disposal, have a passion for sustainable solutions, are not afraid to have challenging conversations where necessary, and are passionate about achieving best value at every opportunity. Stakeholder management is a core part of this role, as you will ensure that staff members, the general public, senior officers, Elected Members and partner organisations are all well informed, supported and engaged with the service we deliver and the journey that we are on.

There is a thirst, a drive, and a passion to embrace what Cumberland can be – and our people are our priority. That’s it. It’s that simple. We have this opportunity to change everything, to fix what isn’t working, to look for new ways of delivering our services so they are the best they can be. We aren’t afraid of a challenge. Local Government Reorganisation is a gift, and a chance to shape our organisation for the better. We plan to grab that chance and run with it – and we would be delighted for you to be part of that journey!
