About the role
With a bin collection round that would stretch from Somerset to Bahrain, we are never complacent about our waste services.  To the contrary, in Somerset we are passionate about our waste. In 2007, we created the first ever Waste Partnership Board of its kind bringing together waste collection and waste disposal services for all councils within the county. Ten years on, our Waste Partnership Board has gone from strength to strength.  This has led the way for similar partnerships across the country.  Regularly on the national stage, it continues to influence and innovate. Our success to date has only fueled our ambitions going forward. As our new Managing Director, we will look to you to continue our journey and seek new ways to improve waste services and drive efficiencies. You will support our partners’ wider council objectives - including protecting the environment, developing better community services and reducing costs. We are confident that you will have a great platform on which to build future success.  You will have the support of empowering management, a highly skilled and motivated team, excellent stakeholder relationships and engaged contract providers. This will provide you with the capacity and the range of expertise you need to make our shared ambitions a reality.  You will explore new ways of working, latest technological advances, driving value through contract management and engage with our communities to improve how we recycle our waste.

About you
Whether your experience of waste services to date is within the public or private sector, what we will be looking for is your ability to drive success. You will be able to demonstrate innovative partnership working delivering results. You will have an empowering approach that gets the very best out of people, as well as  strong personal credibility. The ability to take people with you, and a tenacity to deliver the best service possible, will be what defines your track record to date.

About us
Any one of our residents will tell you that Somerset is a truly great place to live, work and play . Beautiful countryside, stunning beaches and a thriving arts scene are just a few contributing factors to an extremely high quality of life. With our Waste Management Partnership’s office located in the County Town of Taunton, with excellent rail connections, as well as onsite parking, and with easy access to the motorway there is the option to commute.  Whilst our Waste Management Board has its own office and identity, you will be an employee of Somerset County Council and as such will have full access to the Local Government Pension Scheme, as well as many other benefits through our Staff Benefits Scheme and family friendly policies.
