We understand that the design and delivery of waste and recycling services is a tricky area to navigate, particularly with budget pressures and regulatory uncertainty. With that in mind, we have designed a new tool that aims to make it easier to navigate the wealth of free resources and guidance that WRAP has produced over the years for local authorities.

Our new interactive PDF, ‘Waste and Recycling Resources for Local Authorities’ is designed to signpost all our most popular resources which will help you make your waste and recycling service the best it can be.

We’ve categorised our resources under key themes that we know mean something to you – contamination, food waste collections, recycling in urban areas, communications, waste and recycling data, service design, and commercial waste. Under each theme you’ll find signposts to our technical tools, guidance documents, and our communications resources – a wealth of free materials that you can customise for your local area.

It also contains information about the bespoke one-to-one support that we offer to individual local authorities or groups of authorities, providing free and impartial guidance and support on topics such as:

  • Performance benchmarking
  • Modelling and appraising future collection options
  • Procurement of collection services
  • Service design, implementation and evaluation
  • Communications to support service change or improve quality or capture

If you would like to receive a copy of ‘Waste and Recycling Resources for Local Authorities’, please email sophie.hadden@wrap.org.uk. If you think your authority would benefit from accessing our one-to-one support, or would simply like to discuss the kind of support we can offer, please contact us at la.support@wrap.org.uk for more information.

Finally, we’d like to say a big thank you to all our local authority partners who got behind this year’s Recycle Week! You helped make it the biggest and best Recycle Week ever. The week itself saw the launch of Recycle Now’s Do/Does campaign which focussed on social media activity and a big ‘out of home’ advertising campaign. The campaign featured a national tour of a huge ‘We Do’ sign, showing that as a nation ‘We Do’ recycle. This ties in with Recycle Now’s new normative messaging approach around recycling. Impressive headline results include:

  • Trended #1 on Twitter
  • 14.6 million reached online
  • 400,000+ views of the stunt video

For the out of home advertising campaign, the ‘We Do’ imagery was displayed on over 350 JC Decaux sites around England and Northern Ireland. The week also saw some iconic buildings lit up green in support of Recycle Week, and the Liver Building in Liverpool had the Recycle Now swoosh projected onto it.

Over one hundred local authorities, retailers and brands got behind Recycle Week to show their support. Retailers and brands included: John Lewis, Quorn, Tesco’s/Danone, Aldi, Sure, Marmite, Innocent Smoothies, H&M, Heinz, Brecon Carig. Recycle Now also secured over 400 news pieces in titles across the UK.

If you didn’t manage to use the Do/Does campaign materials during Recycle Week, please do start using them now. We need all local authorities to get on board with Recycle Now’s new normative messaging approach in order for us to see a shift in recycling behaviours! For details on how to use the materials and normative messaging, have a look at Recycle Now’s Toolkit which talks you through the approach and how to incorporate it into your existing communications.
