Fly-tipping and littering are costly, environmentally-damaging issues that require targeted action and a partnership approach to overcome the risks to human health, animal welfare and protect communities and homes. In 2014/15, the estimated cost of clearance of fly-tipping to local authorities was nearly £50 million in England and £2 million in Wales. Local authorities dealt with a total of 900,000 incidents of fly-tipping in 2014/15, an increase of 5.6 per cent since 2013/14. To address this issue, on May 9th 2016, the government introduced new powers for local authorities to issue fixed penalty notices up to £400 for small-scale fly-tipping offences.
In December 2015, the Government authored a response to the Communities and Local Government Committee’s Litter and Fly-Tipping in England, Seventh Report, published in March 2015. The response included the introduction of a National Litter Strategy, “which clarifies the contributions that different sectors can make to tackling litter, and to set the context for ongoing anti-litter activity.”
This timely symposium provides an invaluable opportunity for national and local authorities, the environmental sector, the police, private landowners, schools, businesses, third sector groups and other stakeholders to examine the latest developments and assess existing approaches in reducing fly-tipping and littering within our localities.
Delegates will also:

- Gain insights into ways to raise awareness and involve the local community in responding to and reducing fly-tipping and littering
